Chess is one of the greatest games in the canon of entertainment. It has been around for centuries, its exact origins are lost to time. It is thought to have originated somewhere in Asia, India most likely, and migrated to Europe in the middle ages.

The movement of the pieces, once learned, are simple. The board only has 64 spaces. Yet the game of chess is wonderfully complex, those pieces operating in concert in such a finite space creates an as yet mathematically unsolvable game. Only recently have we been able to create supercomputers that can compete with the best human players, long after computers have advanced enough that modest models can emulate weather, economic and political systems as well as virtual and interactive worlds.

In spite of its elegance and beauty, few people play chess today. From the right distance and in the right light, it can be said that chess is now a game primarily for the obsessive, clinically insane or pathologically competitive. Although chess remains unsolved, the openings are mapped well enough that it takes some time studying openings before one can play competently. And once that base level of competence has been achieved, yet more study is required to compete in chess club tournaments. Once this study is undertaken, one can
